Interested in trying the pottery wheel?

Think you might prefer hand building?

Bandicoot Pottery is the professional studio of Gabrielle Powell and Daniel Lafferty who are both formally trained in ceramics at Canberra School of Art with over 30 years experience in ceramics, teaching and community development.

The studio is about 4 kms east of Cobargo NSW. It is an independant pottery studio offering ceramic courses and workshops for any skill level looking to learn, create and connect. We want to provide a welcoming and supportive environment that encourages creativity.

Gabrielle specialises in community arts events and teaching. She is a local artist/potter/basket maker and a long-term member of Spiral Gallery Bega. Her work is mainly moulded earthenware with brightly coloured funky designs.

Daniel is a wood firing specialist creating functional stoneware pieces. Daniel is inspired by the local clay and glaze materials that can be found in the Bega Valley. He prepares his own clay and glazes his works with wood ash from long firings of 70-100 hours. He is a founding member of the Lazy Lizard Gallery Cobargo.

Bruno the dog does the studio welcome barks and behaves best when he gets plenty of attention, pats and cuddles.

Pottery is a perfect hobby for both for children and adults. Pottery grounds you, gives you purpose, confidence and a sense of community. We are keen to share our love of clay with our community after the losses of the Black Summer bushfires. Whether you’re a beginner looking to try pottery for the first time, or you have experience and want to further develop your skills, we have a class for you.

Our classes offer hand building, slab construction, mould work, pinch pots, coil building and wheel work. All classes start with the basic ceramic skills and process, and then you will have plenty of time to get your hands dirty. Pottery is a positive experience filled with imagination and creative education. At the end of the class you'll be able to decorate your works with coloured slip and stains. After the class, we will bisque (first firing) and then glaze fire your ceramic works in my kiln, which makes them functional and usable. About 3 weeks after when the pieces are fired, you will be able to pick them up from our studio.  Note: all clay, materials, glaze and firing costs are included in the pricing.

Our classes are designed for beginners/intermediate level students who want to experience pottery in a welcoming and hands-on environment.  Classes are 2 hours for adults and the goal is that you leave with some self-made pieces and a glimpse into the world of clay.

Our four or six week courses are designed for those who want to develop their ceramic skills further. We have a range of beginner/intermediate courses that include both wheel throwing and hand building. Adult classes get the benefits of 2 teachers with both Daniel and Gabrielle teaching their skills together.

Unleash your children’s creativity with our fun and engaging kids classes usually happen in the school holidays. Kids Clay Club projects cover easy to follow steps.
